Aluminium is the most widely specified material for commercial shopfronts in Essex and across the UK, and for good reason. It offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and the structural capacity to support large glazed areas without heavy framing. Aluminium shopfronts can be powder-coated to virtually any RAL colour, which means your frontage can match exact brand guidelines or architectural specifications.
Aluminium shopfronts suit high-traffic retail environments, restaurants, offices, banks and public-facing commercial premises. They accept single-glazed, double-glazed, laminated and toughened glass panels, and can incorporate automatic doors, side panels, fanlights and transom bars to meet any design requirement.
Toughened Glass and Frameless Glass Shopfronts
Toughened glass shopfronts deliver a clean, contemporary aesthetic that maximises visibility into the retail space. Frameless designs use minimal hardware, with glass panels secured by discreet patch fittings or channel systems rather than visible frames. This creates an uninterrupted glass frontage that is particularly effective for fashion retailers, showrooms, galleries and hospitality venues.
All toughened glass we supply for shopfront installation is manufactured to BS EN 12600. Toughened glass is approximately four to five times stronger than standard annealed glass of the same thickness, and if it does break, it fractures into small, relatively harmless pieces rather than dangerous shards.
For premises requiring additional security, we specify anti bandit laminated glass. This combines two or more layers of glass with an interlayer (typically PVB) that holds the panel together on impact. Anti bandit Laminated glass is the standard recommendation for ground-floor shopfronts in areas with higher crime risk, and it also provides improved acoustic insulation, which benefits premises on busy roads.
Shopfront Materials Compared: Aluminium vs Frameless Glass
The right shopfront material depends on the function of the premises, security requirements, budget and visual objectives:
- Aluminium shopfronts offer the widest range of design flexibility. They accept any glass type, support automatic and manual door systems, and can be powder-coated to any colour. Aluminium is the default choice for banks, building societies, chain retailers and any premises where durability and security are primary concerns. Typical lifespan with proper maintenance exceeds 30 years.
- Frameless glass shopfronts prioritise aesthetics and visibility. They are best suited to boutique retail, showrooms and hospitality venues where an open, inviting frontage is the goal. Frameless systems use toughened or laminated glass panels with minimal hardware. They require more careful specification for security and weather sealing, but create a striking visual effect that framed systems cannot replicate.
We do not supply or install timber shopfronts. For premises replacing an older timber shopfront, we recommend upgrading to aluminium or frameless glass for improved security, thermal performance and longevity, and our survey will assess the structural opening and specify a suitable modern replacement system.
Shopfront Security: Glass Specifications and Standards
Security is a primary concern for any ground-floor commercial premises, and the glass specification is the most important factor in shopfront security performance. We specify glass based on the specific risk profile of each premises, taking into account location and the nature of goods or services inside.
For standard retail shopfronts, we typically recommend 10.8mm Laminated Safety Glass. For higher-security applications, anti bandit laminated glass provides resistance to forced entry because the interlayer holds the glass together even after impact. Attack-resistant glazing to BS EN 356 is available for premises requiring protection against deliberate break-in attempts, including jewellers, electronics retailers and financial services branches. Our team can advise on specification, factoring in local crime statistics, insurer requirements and any landlord or planning stipulations.
Planning Permission for New Shopfronts
Planning permission requirements for shopfronts depend on the location and nature of the changes. In most cases, a straightforward like-for-like replacement of an existing shopfront with a new one of similar design does not require planning permission, as it falls under permitted development rights.
However, planning permission is typically required if:
- The premises are in a conservation area, and the proposed shopfront alters the external appearance.
- The building is listed or has a listed building designation.
- The new shopfront significantly changes the size, shape or projection of the existing frontage.
- External shutters, canopies or signage are being added as part of the installation.

Shopfront Installation Process
Our shopfront installation follows a structured process designed to minimise disruption to trading:
- Free site survey: One of our surveyors visits the premises to take precise measurements, assess the structural opening, discuss design preferences and identify any access or planning considerations.
- Specification and quotation: We prepare a detailed quotation covering materials, glass type, colour finish, door hardware, and installation timescale. For aluminium shopfronts, we confirm the RAL colour and any bespoke requirements at this stage.
- Order and lead-times: Aluminium frames and toughened or laminated glass are ordered to specification from our trusted suppliers. Typical lead times for standard shopfronts are two to four weeks from order confirmation, depending on specification complexity and supplier capacity. Please note; If only glass replacement is required, the lead time would be approximately 1 week.
- Removal and preparation: Our installation team removes the existing shopfront and disposes of waste responsibly.
- Installation: The new shopfront is fitted, glazed, sealed and tested. For single-unit shopfronts, installation is typically completed within one to two days. Larger or multi-unit installations can be scheduled in phases to keep disruption to a minimum if the client so requires.
- Handover and sign-off: We walk through the completed installation with you, demonstrate door and locking mechanisms, and confirm everything meets the agreed specification.
