Double Glazing Condensation Repair
As experts in double-glazing repairs, we are often asked about condensation in double glazing.
To understand condensation in double glazing, it’s first important to know how double glazing is made. Double glazing is effectively two panes of glass sat together with a thermally efficient space in between. The air that gets trapped inside the air vacuum creates an insulating barrier that keeps heat in and the cold out. The glass is then sealed together using a hot melt adhesive. This forms a double-glazed unit.
Condensation in double glazing occurs when the seal breaks down, or as experts like us describe it, fails. Moisture gets through into the glass unit and results in the condensation in double glazing. When this happens, your double glazing is no longer a “sealed unit”, so it will not be performing the function of a sealed double-glazed unit. Therefore, the thermal effects of the air vacuum will no longer be functioning.
Minimal disruption was really important to us and they absolutely delivered on that. Communication throughout was great; we always knew what was happening and when. The quality of the finished work was first class, and the pricing was competitive.
We'll definitely be using SGC Glass again for future projects.
Thanks also to Richard for making sure the design was exactly what I wanted. A great company to deal with at a fair price. Second time I’ve used them and I would definitely continue to do so! Many thanks SGC Glass Ltd.
Simply amazing and we couldn’t be happier.
Thank you so much for your review – it means a lot to us! We are so happy that you are pleased with our service. We will pass on the feedback to the rest of the team.
Great company to deal with, smooth sailing from start to finish. Definitely recommend to all.
Sorted out my bespoke glass order in no time.
Chris, who is very friendly and helpful, who installed the door was excellent, as taking out the old door without damaging the exterior render was not straight forward. But he managed to do it with just minor damage, which he repaired it once the door was fitted.
We’re very pleased with the final product and Chris went the extra mile to make sure the small details were done well.
We’d recommend SGC to others, and are waiting a quote for some further windows from them.
Star service. Highly recommend.
When challenges were finally resolved, Chris and Charlie came and fitted 4 windows and a door in my flat in London, did an excellent job, taking great care when removing the old ones to avoid any damage. They were very polite, the finishing was to a very high standard and they made sure everything was tidied up. Definitely recommend.
Product quality – excellent.
Installation team workmanship and knowledge – excellent.
Very professional and extremely friendly staff who could not have been more helpful.
would recommend SGC to anyone for any Double glazing requirements.
The workmen turned up promptly, worked quickly and carefully and cleaned up after themselves.
The process from discussing what what needed, the cost, and arranging a date for the work (which had to fit in with other work being done) all went smoothly.
I would use SMC Glass again.
Perfect

What Causes Seals to Break on Double Glazed Windows?
There are several reasons why seals on double glazed windows can fail. The age and condition of the window frame may contribute to this, or it could be due to an issue with the manufacturing of the unit itself. In some cases, the way the window was originally installed may be a factor. Certain chemical cleaning products can also damage the seal over time.

Condensation in double glazing also means the broken seals are leaking expensive energy out from your home into the environment, making your heating system work harder than it needs to. During the Winter months especially, we understand how vital it is to replace sealed units which are causing condensation in double glazing at your home.
Repairing faulty seals can be a challenging job to do yourself. The main issue with fixing it yourself is that not every window has the same type of seal. Some manufacturers produce beading and seals that are separate units while others are one-piece units that are difficult to remove.

If you have double glazed windows that are misted due to condensation between the panes of glass, we can simply replace the glass without needing to change the entire frame – a quick and cost-effective solution.

Double Glazing Condensation Repair FAQs
Yes, condensation in double glazing can be fixed, but not by drying the moisture out. Once the sealed unit has failed, the only lasting repair is to replace the glass unit itself. Some companies offer a “demisting” service where a small hole is drilled into the pane to extract the moisture, but this does not restore the original seal or the insulating gas between the panes, so the window will never perform as it did when new. Replacing the sealed unit is a straightforward job for a qualified glazier and, in most cases, the existing frame can be kept, which keeps the cost down.
Condensation sitting between the two panes of glass means the sealed unit has failed. The hot melt adhesive that bonds the panes together has broken down, allowing moist air to enter the cavity and the argon gas to escape. This is what the trade calls a “blown” or “failed” unit. Once it has happened, the window is no longer insulating properly, heat will escape more quickly and your energy bills are likely to rise. A failed unit does not usually pose a safety issue, but it should be replaced to restore the thermal performance.
In almost every case, yes. The glass unit and the frame are two separate components, so a competent glazier can remove the failed sealed unit and fit a new one into your existing uPVC, aluminium or timber frame. This is considerably cheaper than a full window replacement and is usually completed in a single visit. The only time a full replacement is worth considering is if the frame itself is damaged, has rotted or the hardware is at the end of its life.
Condensation on the outside pane is usually a good sign rather than a fault. It forms when the outer glass is colder than the surrounding air, which means the inner pane is holding the heat inside your home rather than letting it radiate out. It is most common on clear, still mornings in spring and autumn, and it clears as soon as the sun warms the glass. Condensation on the outside is not a sign of seal failure. Only moisture trapped between the panes indicates a problem with the unit.
A well-made and properly fitted sealed unit should last around 20 to 25 years before the seal begins to deteriorate, although some units last longer. South-facing windows and those exposed to driving rain tend to fail sooner because the seals are put under more stress by temperature changes and UV exposure. If your windows are misting after only a few years, this usually points to a manufacturing fault or poor installation rather than normal wear, and it is worth checking whether your original guarantee still applies.
