Minimal disruption was really important to us and they absolutely delivered on that. Communication throughout was great; we always knew what was happening and when. The quality of the finished work was first class, and the pricing was competitive.
We'll definitely be using SGC Glass again for future projects.
Thanks also to Richard for making sure the design was exactly what I wanted. A great company to deal with at a fair price. Second time I’ve used them and I would definitely continue to do so! Many thanks SGC Glass Ltd.
Simply amazing and we couldn’t be happier.
Thank you so much for your review – it means a lot to us! We are so happy that you are pleased with our service. We will pass on the feedback to the rest of the team.
Great company to deal with, smooth sailing from start to finish. Definitely recommend to all.
Sorted out my bespoke glass order in no time.
Chris, who is very friendly and helpful, who installed the door was excellent, as taking out the old door without damaging the exterior render was not straight forward. But he managed to do it with just minor damage, which he repaired it once the door was fitted.
We’re very pleased with the final product and Chris went the extra mile to make sure the small details were done well.
We’d recommend SGC to others, and are waiting a quote for some further windows from them.
Star service. Highly recommend.
When challenges were finally resolved, Chris and Charlie came and fitted 4 windows and a door in my flat in London, did an excellent job, taking great care when removing the old ones to avoid any damage. They were very polite, the finishing was to a very high standard and they made sure everything was tidied up. Definitely recommend.
Product quality – excellent.
Installation team workmanship and knowledge – excellent.
Very professional and extremely friendly staff who could not have been more helpful.
would recommend SGC to anyone for any Double glazing requirements.
The workmen turned up promptly, worked quickly and carefully and cleaned up after themselves.
The process from discussing what what needed, the cost, and arranging a date for the work (which had to fit in with other work being done) all went smoothly.
I would use SMC Glass again.
Perfect
What is High-Level Glazing?
High-level glazing refers to the installation, replacement or maintenance of glass that cannot be reached from ground level or standard access equipment. This typically includes any glazing above 3.5 metres, covering everything from first-floor curtain walling panels through to glass at 20 storeys and above. It requires specialist access methods, detailed risk assessments, and operatives certified for working at height.
The types of glazing we handle at height include double-glazed sealed units, toughened safety glass, laminated glass, fire-rated panels, large-format and oversized units, roof lights, atrium glazing and curtain walling. Where units are damaged, misted or failed, we survey the existing installation, source precise replacements, and complete the installation using the most appropriate access method.

The access method we select depends on the building height, glass size and weight, site restrictions, programme requirements and budget. SGC Glass has the equipment and certified operatives to deploy any of the following:
MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms)
Cherry pickers and boom lifts are often the most efficient access method on buildings up to approximately 40 metres. Our IPAF-certified operatives use truck-mounted platforms for rapid deployment and self-propelled booms where site access is restricted, providing a stable working platform for handling heavy or oversized sealed units at height.
Scaffolding and Tower Scaffold
For larger planned programmes where multiple units require replacement across an elevation, scaffolding often offers the most practical and cost-effective access. Our PASMA-certified teams work from scaffold systems compliant with current Working at Height Regulations, commonly specified for school window replacement programmes and commercial refurbishment projects phased across several weeks.
Crane Access
Some projects involve units too large or heavy to be manoeuvred by hand at height. We deploy mobile cranes or mini spider cranes alongside vacuum lifting equipment to position oversized panels with precision, coordinated with full traffic management and lifting plans. Our crane-assisted installations have included large window replacements at prominent commercial buildings.
Rope Access and Abseil Teams
Where building design, site constraints or programme timescales rule out scaffolding or MEWPs, we deploy rope access glaziers. Abseil teams can reach virtually any position on a building facade without the setup time or ground-level footprint of conventional access equipment, particularly effective when a single failed unit needs replacing without disrupting the full envelope. Our rope access glaziers carry out surveys, removals and installations while suspended, working to strict safety protocols.
Dynamic Access Teams
On complex buildings with setbacks, overhangs, atriums or restricted ground-level access, we combine multiple methods within a single project, deploying MEWPs, rope access and manual handling to reach every glazing position. This allows us to complete projects that other contractors may decline due to access complexity.
Building Types We Service at Height
SGC Glass carries out high-level glazing across a wide range of commercial, public sector and industrial building types, with the project management experience to handle the specific compliance and operational constraints of each sector.
Commercial Offices and Glazed Facades
Office buildings with curtain walling, structural glazing or full-height glazed facades require a contractor who can match existing glass specifications precisely. We survey failed or damaged panels, source appropriate replacements, and install with minimal disruption to occupants. Our work with facilities management firms and commercial property managers across London and Essex means we understand the procurement and compliance processes these clients require.
Retail, Shopping Centres and Atriums
Retail environments demand high-level glazing work that does not interrupt trading. We have carried out projects at major retail destinations, Battersea Power Station, Westfield Stratford, Lakeside Shopping Centre, High Chelmer, Eastgate and Grays Shopping Centres replacing roof lights, atrium panels and high-level facade glazing during out-of-hours periods. Shopping centre management teams and FM companies trust us to plan and execute these works within tight overnight windows.
Schools, Hospitals and Public Sector Buildings
High-level glazing in schools, colleges and universities, and hospitals and medical centres, carries additional responsibilities around safeguarding and infection control. All SGC Glass operatives hold valid CSCS cards and are DBS-checked, which is mandatory for educational establishments. We schedule school glazing around term dates and hospital works around ward operations, coordinating closely with facilities teams to minimise disruption.
Industrial Buildings, Internal Atriums and Stairwells
Industrial units frequently have roof lights, clerestory glazing and high-level louvre panels that deteriorate over time, and we replace failed units in factories, distribution centres and warehouses while operations continue. Stairwell glazing, internal atrium panels and overhead glass in reception areas also require specialist access and careful handling, using scaffold towers, internal MEWPs and manual handling techniques appropriate to the space
A Complete High-Level Glazing Service: Survey, Specification and Install
What sets SGC Glass apart is our ability to manage the entire process from a single point of contact. Our process starts with a detailed site survey to assess the failed glazing, confirm dimensions and specifications, evaluate access options, and identify health and safety considerations. We then order replacement double-glazed units, toughened glass or specialist panels through our trusted supplier network, with long-standing relationships keeping lead times competitive and quality consistent.
Installation is carried out by our own glaziers using the access method selected during survey. This single-point-of-contact model reduces handover delays, eliminates finger-pointing between separate suppliers and installers, and gives you one point of accountability from start to finish.
We use the following methods to meet your high level glazing needs:
Safety Credentials and Compliance
High-level glazing is classified as high-risk work under the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Every project begins with a site-specific risk assessment and method statement (RAMS), produced by our project management team and reviewed before any operative arrives on site.
Our safety credentials are verified and current:
IPAF certified operatives for mobile elevating work platforms
PASMA certified for the safe erection and use of mobile scaffold towers
Safety harness trained for safe working at height
Rope access trained for abseil and suspended access work
CSCS card holders across all site operatives, with NVQs in their field
SSSTS and SMSTS qualified site supervisors and managers
CHAS accredited under the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme
Safe Contractor approved and Achilles accredited
Constructionline Silver member, pre-qualified for public and private sector procurement
FENSA registered (membership 22039) and members of the Glass and Glazing Federation
DBS checked operatives for work in schools, hospitals and sensitive environments
These accreditations are not just badges on a website; they are active compliance requirements checked by FM companies, local authorities and construction firms we work with. We provide your compliance team with full documentation before work begins.
Planned Maintenance and Emergency High-Level Glazing
We work with facilities management companies, building managers and property estate teams on both planned maintenance programmes and emergency glazing callouts.
Planned maintenance allows building managers to schedule high-level glass replacement during quieter periods, budget in advance, and coordinate with tenants. We produce detailed project programmes, conduct pre-start meetings, and manage the work through to handover. For clients managing multiple sites, we offer ongoing support as a preferred glazing contractor.
Emergency response covers situations where high-level glazing has failed unexpectedly due to storm damage, impact, vandalism or thermal stress fracture. We provide rapid boarding-up to make the building weathertight and secure, followed by survey and permanent replacement on the shortest achievable programme.
Out-of-Hours and Weekend Working
Many buildings we service at height cannot accommodate glazing works during normal business hours. Hospitals, schools, shopping centres and public-facing retail spaces all require work outside operating hours, and we routinely carry out high-level glazing during evenings, overnight shifts and weekends. This is standard practice, priced and programmed into every project.
Project Experience
SGC Glass completes high-level glazing projects for FM companies, construction contractors, architects and building owners on a regular basis. A notable project includes glazing works at Royal Ascot Racecourse, where our team used specialist access equipment to carry out complex installations that other contractors had declined. We regularly complete high-level glazing and window replacements to university campuses in both London and Essex that often have complex access requirements and require careful planning and management. We would be happy to provide client references upon request.
Our client base includes facilities management firms seeking a reliable partner for reactive and planned works, construction companies needing specialist glazing subcontractors for fit-out and refurbishment, and architects specifying replacement glazing for envelope upgrades. With 30 years of experience and a stable, long-serving installation team, we bring continuity and dependable delivery to every commission.

High-Level Glazing FAQs
High-level glazing is the installation, replacement or maintenance of glass at heights that cannot be safely reached from ground level. It typically applies to glazing above 3.5 metres and covers curtain walling, glazed facades, atriums, stairwells, roof lights and high-rise windows. Specialist access equipment and certified operatives are required to comply with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
Safe high-level glass replacement starts with a site-specific risk assessment and method statement. The access method is selected based on building height, glass size, site conditions and programme requirements, and may include MEWPs, scaffolding, cranes, rope access or a combination. All operatives must hold the relevant certifications for the equipment used, and large-format units typically require vacuum lifters and mechanical aids.
Not necessarily. MEWPs, rope access and crane-assisted methods may be more appropriate depending on the number of units, site restrictions, and programme timescales. For a single failed unit on a tall building, rope access is often faster and more cost-effective than full scaffolding. We assess every project individually and recommend the method that delivers the best balance of safety, efficiency and value.
Timescales depend on the number of units, access method, glass specification and lead time for sourcing replacements. A single high-level unit using a MEWP can often be completed within one day once the glass has been delivered. Larger programmes involving multiple elevations, scaffolding erection and phased works may take several weeks.
Look for IPAF certification (for MEWP operation), PASMA certification (for scaffold towers), CSCS cards, and CHAS or Safe Contractor accreditation. Rope access work should be carried out by specifically trained technicians holding IRATA certifications, and for schools or healthcare settings, DBS-checked operatives are essential. SGC Glass always works with these accreditations.
Yes. We regularly handle large-format sealed units and oversized glass panels that exceed safe manual handling limits, using vacuum lifting equipment, mini spider cranes and mobile cranes to position heavy glass at height. We work with experienced UK glass suppliers to source oversized units to exact specifications.
