SGC Glass undertakes full window and door replacement at Moulsham High School as main contractor

SGC Glass was appointed as the principal contractor to carry out a full replacement of windows, doors and external cladding at Moulsham High School. The school required upgraded glazing systems to comply with current regulations, while also addressing several existing doors that were no longer fit for purpose.

Following the award of contract, SGC Glass conducted full site surveys and installed a benchmark window to demonstrate the chosen specification and operational performance. Once approved, all windows and doors were designed in-house, with detailed drawings and specifications submitted for sign-off ahead of commencement.

Window design and installation

A total of 662 individual windows were designed and installed using the Cortizo HI Casement and 4900 Horizontal Slider systems. All units were finished in anthracite grey both internally and externally, complete with 90mm cills and glazed-in vents to support natural ventilation requirements.

The glazing specification comprised 4mm clear toughened safety glass with Low-e 1.0 performance, paired with a 16mm black warm edge spacer filled with argon gas and finished with 4mm grey toughened safety glass to provide both thermal efficiency and aesthetic consistency.

Bespoke aluminium panels were also incorporated where required, using 1.5mm powder coated sheets bonded to a polyfoam core for a robust 28mm overall construction. Louvres were manufactured to the F30Z specification with P2 bird mesh, colour matched in RAL 7016M to ensure a seamless appearance across the façade.

High-performance commercial doors

The entrance and access points across the school were upgraded with 37 new commercial doors fabricated using the Aluminium Seniors SPW 501 system. As with the windows, all doors were finished in anthracite grey to create a uniform and modern look. Each unit featured overhead concealed closers for smooth operation, along with 485 touch bar panic escape hardware with a concealed rod system to meet emergency egress requirements.

External-only lever handles with key access were installed for controlled entry, while aluminium ramped thresholds ensured ease of access. The glazing specification mirrored the performance of the windows, combining 4mm grey toughened safety glass with a 16mm black warm edge spacer and argon fill, finished internally with 6.8mm laminated Low-e safety glass to deliver strength, security and energy efficiency.

Complete project management

As SGC Glass managed the full works package, we were able to retain full control over material sourcing, fabrication quality and delivery scheduling. All windows and doors were designed, fabricated and installed by our own team.

To minimise disruption to pupils and staff, the main installation works were carried out over half-term breaks and the summer holidays, with weekend working included where necessary. The full programme was completed in approximately 12 weeks.

Additional subcontracted works managed under our remit included scaffolding, asbestos removal, electrical work, door alarm removal and installation, plumbing and painting. The site setup incorporated two 40ft containers for material storage, skips, Heras fencing to segregate working areas and edge protection for roof works.

Ongoing partnership

Following the successful completion at Moulsham High School, SGC Glass is surveying  further schools for the same client.
